Explore Jupiter, Florida, in an RVshare RV Rental

Jupiter, called Hobe initially, was first settled by the Hobe tribe of Native Americans along the Loxahatchee River. Somewhere along the line of history, the Spanish thought "Hobe" was spelled "Jobe," and it became further tainted as "Jove." When the English arrived in 1763, they interpreted the name as Jove and referred to the area as Jupiter. Fort Jupiter was later built in 1838 after one of the many battles with the Seminole tribe on the Loxahatchee River.

By 1855, the 9,088-acre Jupiter Military Reservation was built around Fort Jupiter, and it included the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and a post office. The post office was only active from 1855 to 1856, during the Third Seminole War. From 1916 to 1917, a group of nine British aviators used Jupiter as a training ground for three small seaplanes. In 1925, the town was incorporated, and a year later, a federal highway was completed to Miami, and then, a bridge went up across the Loxahatchee River.

The lighthouse still stands today, serving as the park and community center for the area. Tours of the lighthouse grounds and museum include tower climbs, nature walks, and various scenic events. The museum features several exhibits of Native American and early pioneer culture. There is a small fee to enter the museum.

Plant your umbrella at outstanding beaches such as Jupiter Beach Park and Carlin Park. Jupiter Beach is a large sandy beach where you can kick back, relax, and watch the waves come in or take a dip in the lagoon. At Carlin Park, visitors can play volleyball, run or walk the exercise course, play softball, or light up a grill to cook a delicious picnic lunch along this massive beachfront park.
