The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site centers around a solution to a huge problem that the people of Pennsylvania faced in the 1800s. After the construction of the Erie canal, many people stopped trading in this area. It was simply too hard to get their products to market. They considered building their own canal system, but the Allegheny Mountains made this difficult. Steam locomotives at this time didn't have the power to pull a loaded train over them. They considered a tunnel, but it was too risky. The solution was to construct incline train tracks that used cables to get trains over the mountains. Visitors still come to see the incline railways today. The site includes several hiking trails and historical buildings depicting life in 1840. The Skew Arch Bridge and The Staple Bend Tunnel are must-see spots while visiting.

The Johnstown Flood National Monument commemorates the tragic flood of 1889 which killed 2,209 people when ten inches of rain fell overnight, causing the local dam to break and sending more than 14 million cubic meters of water into the town of Johnstown.
