Explore Gold Beach, Oregon, in an RVshare RV Rental

Gold Beach sits 40 miles north of the California border and is quite different from other coastal towns for its blend of forest, river, and ocean. It's a weaving of Native American cultures and wars, ranchers, mill workers, gold miners, fisherman, European fur trappers, and town folk. In the mid-1800s, once gold was discovered in California, shiny stuff was found in the beach sand near the mouth of the Rogue River. Gold Beach, originally named Ellensburg, was born and soon became the county seat of the newly formed Curry County. In the late 19th century, the Gold Beach area was known for heavily harvesting salmon. By 1876, Robert D. Hume established a canning operation that rapidly dominated the industry. Today, Gold Beach has become a hub for whitewater jet boating, windsurfing, kayaking, and wilderness mountain biking and hiking.

Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint is a split between Pistol River South and Pistol River North. The state park is a set of dunes of the Oregon coast that are ever-changing as the river system feeds them. The river also has changed its course often, creating pothole ponds that attract shorebirds and waterfowl. Not far away is Cape Sebastian State Scenic Corridor, where a deep forest of Sitka spruce covers most of the park, and a walking trail takes you out to the lower levels of the cape. You'll go over rocky cliffs and viewpoints to observe migrating whales.

Prehistoric Gardens is open to the public to view scientifically correct restorations, authentic in detail, and restored lifelike dinosaur models. There are 23 dinosaurs in total, ranging from flying pteranodon with a wingspan of 27 feet to a massive brachiosaurus that towers 46 feet off the ground. It also has a biodiversity-rich rainforest with average rainfall between six to 10 feet per year. Discover the 300-year-old forest as the tour takes you through its ecosystem.

Gold Beach also has fun museums you can visit. The Curry Historical Museum showcases the fascinating history of Oregon's spectacular south coast. As you walk through the museum, history comes alive through its artifacts and discoveries.
