Present-day Cross City was home to the Blackfeet, Crows, and Sioux for many years before the arrival of colonists and settlers in the late 19th century. It was initially known as Crossroads because it was where two significant trade paths crossed each other. In 1912, the area changed its name to Cross City, following the establishment of Dixie County from Lafayette County.
Cross City started thriving in the early 1920s when Putman Lumber Company established a town called "Shamrock" nearby. The company built an enormous sawmill and constructed a community around it to house employees. A full-service store, an ice house, and other amenities soon popped up in the community. The prospering lumbar industry in Shamrock led to immense economic and population growth in Cross City.
Besides the lumber industry, the city had other promising economic sectors, including transportation, tourism, and manufacturing. In 1927, the lumber company built the Putman Lodge to accommodate top employees and clients. It also targeted tourists passing through the area. This upscale hotel and spa is still open today and is a must-see historic site on your tour of Cross City.
Today, Cross City is a small town measuring about 1.85 square miles and is home to approximately 1,700 people. In spite of its small size, the area has a lot to see and do.
