Explore Bloomington, Minnesota in an RVshare RV Rental

Bloomington, Minnesota sits on the north bank of the Minnesota River and is 10 miles due south of the Minneapolis city center. European settlers first came to the area in 1851 and named the area after their hometown of Bloomington, Illinois. Bloomington was officially incorporated on May 11, 1858, the same day the United States Congress granted Minnesota statehood.

The population of Bloomington continued to grow throughout the 19th century. By 1900, Bloomington had a population of over 1000 people, and initial infrastructure was laid down. Bloomington's greatest growth came later, however, in the years following World War II as an increase in affordable housing dramatically increased Bloomington's population. Bloomington's growth would slow by the 1970s, but not before the town had become home to Metropolitan Stadium, home to the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings until 1981.

Metropolitan Stadium was demolished in 1985 to make way for Bloomington's most ambitious construction project to date, the Mall of America. The Mall of America is the largest shopping mall in the United States and the ninth-largest mall worldwide. It spans nearly 100 square acres and features 520 separate retailers. At the center of the megamall, there is even an amusement park.

Today, the Mall of America is the largest employer in Bloomington. Bloomington serves as a bedroom community for Minneapolis but still retains its own history and culture. If you'd like to know more about the area, the Mclean County Museum of History tells the full story of Bloomington's pre-Mall of America growth and development.
