Explore Antlers, Oklahoma in an RVshare RV Rental

The indigenous Caddo people lived in the Antlers area during peak European colonization efforts. The United States gave the land to the Choctaw people in 1832 without realizing other groups already lived there. Many indigenous peoples throughout the west were forced to cede the majority of their lands. While some local Native Americans were granted land rights, they still had to give railroads and railroad stations the right of way.

The site that would become the city of Antlers was chosen to be a station because it had a freshwater spring. The local Choctaw people had improved the roads and highways, making travel easier and safer. A post office was established in Antlers in 1887. Under the Dawes Act of 1887 and the Curtis Act of 1898, the United States changed how Native Americans owned land. This resulted in most of the area being claimed by the United States, allowing what was once the Indian Territory to be formed into the state of Oklahoma in 1907.

The city was named Antlers because the area was a popular spot for bucks to shed their antlers in late winter by rubbing them on trees. This annual event is a sign of the coming spring. The city of Antlers today is a resort town and gateway to the Kiamichi Mountains. Visitors often spend their days hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, and relaxing.
