Located in the Lehigh valley in eastern Pennsylvania, the city of Allentown is home to just under 120,000 people. Founded before America was born, in 1762, and originally Christened Northampton, Allentown took the name of its founder, William Allen, one year later in 1763. Its claim to fame dates back as far as the Revolutionary War, because the Liberty Bell was hidden here from the British.
Climate-wise, Allentown lies in the transition between Humid subtropical and Humid continental. There are four distinct seasons here, but you typically won’t find the winters to be bitterly cold. Even so, annually, you can expect to see some 34 inches of snow during the winter months. Bear that in mind and dress appropriately, and you’ll be fine in your RV rental Allentown PA!
You owe it to yourself to check out the America on Wheels museum, even if you’re not a motor head. It’s not a sprawling museum, but it’s fascinating, combining wheeled transport throughout our history with lighthearted fun. It’s not often that you find a place that can manage to pull off serious and fun at the same time, but America on Wheels does it in style.
In keeping with the automotive theme above, you should also check out the Mack Truck museum. The company has a proud, interesting history, and you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised when you go there. Also, you’ll want to bring the kids or grandkids so they can get a picture next to the “Transformer Trust” used in the “Transformers” movies. They’ll love it, and you will too.
If you’re looking for a great place to spend an afternoon with the kids or grandkids – somewhere that’s both educational and fun, then look no further than the DaVinci Science Center. Filled with tons of “hands on” exhibits, this one will both dazzle and amaze. Not to be missed.
There are actually nearly twenty campgrounds in the vicinity of Allentown – far too many to list here, so we’ll restrict ourselves to just talking about the best of the best.
Open year round, you’ll find plenty to like about Stoneybrook. Prices range from $40-$45 a night for a space, and spaces come with a number of amenities, including free WiFi, full hookups, a game room, dedicated Rec. Hall and a heated pool, as well as a playground for the smaller children. You’ll also find that major cable services are available, as is an ice machine, laundry facility, firewood and LP gas by meter for your camper rental Allentown PA. There’s even a small convenience store for groceries on the property and they’re pet friendly too! Of course, all of this is in addition to the how showers and clean restrooms, making Stoneybrook a campground that pretty much has it all.
Prices range a bit higher here, starting at $40, but going as high as $61 per night, and this campground is NOT open year round, only being open from April 1 to November 1 each year. It’s got all the amenities you’ve come to expect from a top-tier campground, including full hookups, a game room with a separate rec. hall, free WiFi, a playground for the kids, the major cable channels if you want them, a laundry facility and an ice machine for your motorhome rental Allentown PA. Pets are also welcome here, so you might be thinking what’s different about this place that might make you pick it over the one we just talked about (above). The answer is the body of water – Switzer Creek.
True, it’s just a creek, but it’s lovely, and if you’re looking for a scenic vista with access to the water, then this campground just might be the perfect place for you!
With prices starting at just $40, and ranging to as high as $55, Colonial Woods represents a nice middle ground between the two campgrounds we’ve mentioned thus far. They’re not open year round, so be aware of that, actually only being open from April 4 to November 1, each year. Pets are allowed, however, and the campground has all the amenities mentioned for the other two. Like the KOA, there is at least some water access, this time in the form of a small pond. Not as much fun as a river or lake, but certainly a nice perk!
There’s always something going on in the area, and the Allentown event calendar is bursting at the seams no matter what month you choose to travel there. Here are some of our personal favorites though.
Held annually on Memorial Day weekend since 1986, this is an arts and culture extravaganza that draws more than 50,000 people to the region each year. It’s a family-friendly weekend featuring all the food, music, and fun. Come feast your eyes on the dazzling creations of the area’s local artists and craftsmen!
This one should come as no surprise, given the two museums we mentioned above. A four-day event held on the third week of March, featuring 110,000 square feet of cars throughout history. If you love the rumble of engines and the smell of gas, then you won’t want to miss this one, and it makes a great accompaniment to the visits to the museums mentioned earlier.
Now in its 34th year, the Annual Roasting of the Corn is much more than “just” a celebration of food as the name implies. It’s a celebration of American Indian art, culture, and heritage. If you’re a fan of history, then this is a must-see.
Allentown, PA is a mid-sized city with a bit of everything. Plenty of history, lots of great, fun exhibits to see, and a great family-friendly place, to boot. Start planning your trip now, you won’t regret it!
