The International Bluegrass Music Museum is based here and visitors can learn all about local music legends such as Bill Monroe, the Everly Brothers and W.C. Handy. Festivals are run year-round in the town and those traveling to the region certainly won’t want to miss a world-famous Kentucky bluegrass festival.

There’s also plenty of recreational and outdoor attractions within Owensboro, including Smothers Park, Reid’s Orchard, Yellow Creek Park, and Western Kentucky Botanical Garden. If possible, it’s best to stay a few days in this city so you have plenty of time to experience all that it has to offer!

This famous and grand building also offers a behind-the-scenes walking tour, offering special access to exclusive areas of Churchill Downs Racetrack.

Other museums include Art Sparks at the Speed Art Museum, which is popular among art lovers. There are also countless breweries within the city, all celebrating the world-famous Kentucky Bourbon.

Louisville North Campground is the closest campground to downtown Louisville and it’s the ideal base camp for attending the city’s major attractions and events. They offer paved sites to suit all sizes of RV and include 20, 30, and 50 amp full hookups.

Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area

If you want to immerse yourself in nature, you’ll certainly want to head to Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area. There’s so many fun outdoor activities to do in this 2,600-acre riverfront park, including hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, horse riding, kayaking, canoeing, archery, and disc golf. There’s also a campground on-site containing electrical sites.

Plenty of wildlife such as deer, squirrel, snakes, and birds call the recreation area home, so guests should keep their eyes open for exciting wildlife viewing opportunities.

Where to Camp

While the Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area does offer some electrical sites with its own campground, it’s only operated by staff from April 1 through October 31. It does remain open outside of these dates, however, but campers must check-in at the office during off-peak season.

Must-see attractions within Bernheim include the scenic Canopy Tree Walk, the one-of-a kind Edible Garden, and over 40 miles of beautiful forest trails.

There’s also an on-site visitor center with a gift shop, as well as Isaac’s Café, which uses fresh produce straight from Bernheim’s Edible Garden.

Grandma’s RV Camping is located 5 miles from Bernheim Arboretum & Research and offers large RV sites with 30 and 50 amp services, as well as restrooms and shower facilities.

Henderson is another must-visit city in northwest Kentucky, particularly for the John James Audubon State Park and Museum. The museum celebrates the life and work of artist and naturalist James Audubon and is housed in a beautiful, historic building full of charm. Visitors can also watch two short films on offer at the museum, as well as visit the on-site gift shop.

The state park surrounding the museum provides visitors with plenty of scenic hiking trails and nature viewing opportunities, particularly of the birdlife. There are also paddleboats and canoes for rent.

There’s also a campground located in the James Audubon State Park, allowing visitors to stay overnight in their RV. It’s open between April 1 - November 12 each year.
