Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument

About 900 years ago, Native people in what is now Arizona watched in horror as red molten lava flowed down, destroying everything they knew. While most inhabitants seem to have fled, the earth was changed forever as a huge volcanic crater rose 1,000 feet into the air. The aftereffects of the volcano left a lasting impact on this area near Flagstaff. While the Colorado Plateau is home to more than 900 extinct volcanoes, this one is the youngest.
