Cheesequake State Park is just 19 minutes away from Perth Amboy and has a 386-acre natural area. This park is a botanical preserve with saltwater marshes, freshwater marshes, open fields, the Pine Barrens, a northeastern hardwood forest and a white cedar swamp. If you want to take a break from taking in the beauty of nature, then you may want to go on a hike.
Cheesequake State Park has four marked loop trails that are used for only hiking. It also has a multi-use trail for cross-country skiers, bicyclists and hikers. This trail has several slopes for acrobatic hike jumps and pedestrian bypasses. Other features include campsites, an interpretive center, picnic areas, fishing, boating, swimming and canoeing. You can swim in Hooks Creek Lake from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Swimmers also have access to the beach complex, which provides concessions, a changing area, a first-aid station, beach supplies and novelties.
“Love this park. Trails are fairly easy so the whole family can enjoy (great for kids). Nature center has everything from your educational material to live turtles, blue jays…and chipmunks greeting you at the door. Friendly rangers. I visit at least twice a year and it’s so pleasant and peaceful. Try to arrive early before the crowd.” S. P., Google Reviews
