Don’t Just Walk Your Dogs, RV With Them!

Maybe it’s the adventure, maybe it’s because of the snug space, but many travelers feel that RVing brings them closer together with their families; so there is an increase of families opting to take a getaway in an RV over staying in hotel rooms. Regardless of the many reasons families choose to do so, there is one reason that’s becoming increasingly popular, and that reason is that families want to bring their pets along. Now’s the perfect time to hit the road and RV with dogs!

As odd as it sounds, according to the data, there’s been a huge surge in families buying or renting RVs so that they can bring their pets along instead of leaving them behind. In fact, a 2011 survey by Pet Relocation discovered that around 60% of owners traveled with their pets at some point in 2010. Out of those, 58% said they were going to do it again.

Here’s where it gets interesting, though. Of those surveyed by Pet Relocation, a whopping 22% said they travel with their pets monthly! And dogs seem to be the most popular traveling companions of all domesticated pets. 58% of people who travel with pets, travel with their dogs, 22% travel with cats, 8% travel with birds, and 6% even travel with their horses.

One of the main reasons why owners choose RVs over other accommodations is the flexibility that RVing provides when you have animals with you. More than 28% of people surveyed find difficulties with finding pet-friendly hotels the main reason why RVing wins every time. When you’re in an RV, you can play with your animal as much (and within reason, as loud) as you want. Whether you’re at a campsite, or roughing it in a picture perfect nature spot, you can taking your pet around with you, get exercise, and enjoy your time together.

You can even enjoy your vacation longer because your pet is with you. A 2014 study done by TripIt showed that 77% of owners are influenced on vacationing by their pets. Having a pet at home is a big reason why many families need to cut their travels short. Bringing your pet along for the ride gets rid of that issue.

Tips When Bringing Pets

Here are some quick tips when traveling with your pets.

  • Safety first. Many like to let their pets walk around the rig while on the road. Instead, you should make sure to secure your dog to a harness while you’re driving to ensure its safety in the event of an accident.
  • If you’re traveling for a long period of time, make sure to buy food that is readily available (located everywhere). While RVing it’s really easy to find yourself in the middle of nowhere, or small town that may not carry those “rare” brands.
  • Before heading to a new state, make sure to read up on what their specific laws state about leaving an animal alone in a vehicle.
